Authorities in California found the body of a man at the scene of a plane crash in San Bernardino County over the weekend. According to WABC-TV, the aircraft went down around 8:20 p.m. Saturday (April 13) near the 215 Freeway at the Kendall Drive and Palm Avenue exit.
"Witnesses in the north end of San Bernardino reported hearing a plane sputter and then a loud crash, followed by a red flash," the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department wrote in a statement. Law enforcement believes the aircraft was a twin-engine Gulfstream AC95.
Deputies and police officers searched the area, but the mountain area wasn't accessible via vehicle or on foot, officials wrote. The sheriff's Aviation Division tried to help with the search, but the weather hindered their flying ability.
The search continued Sunday morning (April 14) and the Aviation Division located a debris field in the mountains north of Devil’s Canyon. Due to the terrain, a search and rescue crew was also deployed to assist a coroner's office investigator, according to deputies.
Officials said they discovered a deceased man at the scene. He was later identified as 35-year-old Blake E. Broadbent, of Riverside. It's unclear whether Broadbent was on the ground or an occupant of the aircraft.
No word on what caused the plane crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the ongoing investigation.
