17 sailors and 4 civilians are being treated for non-life threatening injuries after a fire broke out yesterday on the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego. The fire broke out just before 9am yesterday morning with an explosion on the ship taking place at 11am. Approximately 160 sailors were aboard the San Diego-based ship at the time of the fire. The entire crew was evacuated from the ship, and all were accounted for. National city officials are urging nearby residents to take precautions to limit potential health impacts due to the heavy smoke which includes staying indoors and limiting outdoor activities. In a tweet, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer thanked the “brave sailors and rescue crews.”
Encinitas officials have temporarily eased outdoor drinking rules on sidewalks for restaurants. City Council unanimously approved Friday a decision to lift its ban on possession of open alcoholic beverages in the public right-of-way (aka on the sidewalks). So this will allow restaurants to serve alcohol to customers outdoors. The lift of alcohol rules is temporary during the pandemic. All food and alcohol services must end at 10 p.m. daily. Escondido just did the same following in the footsteps of downtown and Little Italy.
San Diego County has opened cool zones to face the heat!! The former Sears building at Chula Vista Center is open to provide socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat. The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will remain open throughout the week. There will be seating available and movies playing. Water is allowed, but no food, no smoking and no pets. Each visitor will receive a temperature screening and will be need to social distance.
