Review: Based on the best-selling series, Divergent takes place in post-apocalyptic Chicago and every person is placed in factions that determine what each individual’s role is in society. At the age of 16, each individual is tested to figure out their true human virtue and the result strongly influences what faction that person lives in. Although the faction system is intended to clearly distinguish the citizens where there place in life is, Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is a special case because her inconclusive test results indicated that she is something they call “Divergent”. Divergents are seen as a threat to the system because they think differently and are not easy to conform.  Amongst the turmoil of a corrupt political government, Tris struggles to not only survive in a war-like world, but also in indentifying her true self. For not having read the books, Divergent does a fantastic job in explaining the story clearly. Very commendable, especially since it has an intricate and complicated plot. The action stunts during the training scenes are very well-choreographed. The acting was lacking in emotion, but it was played off well if you take into account of how the world has changed. What I appreciated most about the movie is the love story being subtle and not so lovey-dovey like other series we’ve seen.

I give Divergent one thumbs up.
