Review: This movie totally reminds of a French version of Mad Men because of its portrayal of the 1950s, when women were commonly believed to only having one occupation in life: being a housewife.  But like Peggy from Mad Men, Rose Pamphyle (Déborah Franҫois) dreams of being a modern French girl by being a secretary in the nearby city.  Being from a small village makes it difficult for Rose to stand out from the rest of the crowd, but she soon wows people all over the world with her talent of being a fast typist, with help from her boss who trains her vigorously for regional, national, and international competitions.  Populaire features these competitions as a real sport, which is crazy and ridiculous to think about since we’re so used to typing on a normal basis.  Not only are the contests intense, but the film shows women’s historical struggle to transition from working at home to being active members of the public working world.  Along with having the feel of an inspirational-sport/competition movie, Populaire does a good job with tying in a love story that is not cheesy at all, but rather humorous. And doesn't everything sound so romantic when it's in French?? Oui, Oui!

I give Populaire two thumbs up overall.
